You can control the charging of the vehicle through the ChargePoint app. Therefore, you can schedule the unit to charge the vehicle at a lower rate and reduce your energy bills. The app also sends you notifications to plug in the charger in case you forget it and shows you the available ChargePont stations. This unit is smart home compatible and works with Nest and Alexa. Installing the unit is very simple, you just need to follow the instructions. This model is backed by a 3-year warranty from any defects in materials or workmanship.

VERDICT

Great option if you’re looking for a Wi-Fi enables EV charger. It is very stylish, easy to use and set up, and very efficient. It is compatible with all EVs and it charges most cars in up to 4 hours. This model has an energy star certification and is UL listed. The only drawback is that it lacks a stop button so if you want to stop the charging, you will have to unplug the cord.

2. JuiceBox Pro 40

Another option worth considering is JuiceBox Pro 40. This model is, in fact, the most compact unit in our list, although it is a little bit heavy. Like all the other level 2 charges, this one is able to charge your car very fast, adding up to 31 miles of range per hour. For installing it, you will only need a 4-50R outlet to plug in the unit. Many of the necessary accessories come with the charger.

Just like the previous model, this one is Wi-Fi enabled. You just need to download the JuiceNet App and you can control the charger from the distance. The app allows you to schedule charging, access the charging history, set wire limit, and so on. You will also receive notifications when the charging starts or stops, or when the unit is offline. VERDICT

This charger is versatile, as it was designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It is easy to install and features a compact design. The included cable is long but a little bit heavy so is more difficult to maneuver it. You can control it by using the smartphone or by using voice commands. However, we would’ve liked it to come with a hook or something else to hang the cable on.

3. Schneider Electric EV230WS

This is another popular model that does a great job when it comes to charging your electric vehicle. It can only be installed indoors but since it features a slim and minimalist design, you will barely notice it on the wall. What is interesting about this model is that you can choose your favorite skin design from more than 600 options, or you can upload your favorite photo for a custom skin without paying any extra money. It comes with an 18-foot cord and all the necessary accessories for the installation.

Unlike the previous models, this one has no Wi-Fi, so you won’t be able to control it with your smartphone. The LED display is a nice addition as it shows you when the vehicle is charging and for how long. Additionally, just by pressing a button, you can delay the charging for a specific period of time. In case of a power outage or fault, the automatic restart feature will resume charging the car when this will be possible. The manufacturer covers this charger station for only 1-year.

  • Possibility to delay charging
  • You can choose your own design from many available: 600 skins or a photo at your choice
  • Features a nice LED display

VERDICT

Reliable option for all those who are looking for an efficient and easy to use charging station. The installation can be done by yourself without the help of an electrician. At the same time, the unit comes with many built-in features which add more convenience. What we don’t like is the short warranty. In comparison to the other models, this one is backed by only one year. Also, the plastic cover makes it look cheap and less durable.

Also, there’s a delay function that allows you to delay the charging by 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. For more convenience, there are 2 wiring options, bottom-fed and rear-fed. In case there are any defects in workmanship and materials, the manufacturer covers the unit for a period of 3 years from the date of purchase.

Nice option if you’re looking for a more affordable option. This is the cheapest model in our list. Overall, the unit is well-made although the housing is made of plastic. Same with the mounting bracket. You can install it indoors or outdoors with absolutely no inconvenience. However, the user manual it comes with is not very comprehensive, so you may want to check the online manual before installing it.

6. Zencar Level 2 EV Charger

Aspects We Considered When We Ranked the Stations

Now that we compared and reviewed the products, let’s find out how exactly we ranked them. We paid special attention to the construction, built-in features, as well as warranty. Learning more about the most important characteristics that matter when it comes to electric EVs charging station, will help you better determine which option is better for you.

  • Dimensions

Due to the fact that some models are made for indoor use, knowing their size may be helpful. We’ve only picked those units that are compact and don’t occupy too much space on the wall. A large model can be unaesthetic. Form this point of view, the best option is JuiceBox Pro 40 as 3.5 inches deep, 6 inches wide and 10 inches tall. However, this model comes with a heavy cord. In general, the total weight doesn’t matter too much as all the charging stations will be installed on the wall but a light cable is definitely a better option.

  • Type of Installation

When it comes to installation, there are 2 possibilities: indoor and outdoor. Some units are specially designed for indoor or outdoor use, while others can be installed both indoors and outdoors. ChargePoint CPH25-L18-P and Schneider Electric EV230WS are the only models that require an indoor installation. The other 3 units are more versatile from this point of view as you can choose the type of installation. In general, outdoor chargers are made from more durable materials. Our stations feature a NEMA 4 enclose that protects them from corrosion and extreme weather conditions.

  • Amperage

In case you own an electric car, it’s recommended to get a model that offers at least 30 amps at 240V. However, for hybrid electric vehicles, a station that supplies 16 amps at 240V will do the job. In general, level 2 charging stations allow up to 80 amps but most EVs can’t accept more than 30 amps. Currently, Clipper Creek is among the few companies that make models that supply more than 30 amps. Although it seems that is not worth to invest in a unit that offers more than 30 amps, you will find it very useful when you buy an EV with a longer-range.

  • Cord Length

In general, it’s recommended to get a unit with a power cord as long as possible. In this way, you will be able to install the station closer to the service panel or charge the battery while the car is parked in the driveway. Also, if you have visitors who have an EV, they will be able to use your charger with no hassle. Cables that are less than 15 feet are rather short, so they may not be the best option for you. To find out how long should be the cable, you can measure the distance between the place where you intend to install the station and the place where you usually park the car. According to the NEC (National Electric Code) requirements, the maximum cable length approved is 25 feet. From this point of view, the most generous model is ClipperCreek HCS-40P with a cable of 25 ft. ChargePoint CPH25-L18-P and Schneider Electric EV230WS have cables that measure 18 feet.

  • Features

The more features, the better. All our units come with basic features like cord management solution and LED lights indicators. These are great additions as they offer more convenience. But some of them come with more impressive features. ChargePoint CPH25-L18-P and JuiceBox Pro 40 are Wi-Fi enabled, so they are smartphone-controlled. The apps allow you to control and track the charge and more. The other 3 models don’t have a Wi-Fi connectivity but they come with some pretty interesting features. We particularly like the delay and the auto restart feature.

  • Warranty

Most of our units are covered by a 3-year warranty. The only exception is Schneider Electric EV230WS. This model is backed by only 1 year. During this period of time, the manufacturer warrants the product against any defects in materials or workmanship. Considering the fact that EV charging stations are a long-term investment, we would’ve expected them to come with a longer warranty.

Classification According to the Charging Rates

According to the charging rates, the charging equipment for the EVs is classified in 3 types: level 1, level 2, and level 3.

  • Level 1: These chargers use standard 120V outlets and they require a dedicating circuit. This is, in fact, a cord that has one end with a 3-prong household plug and one end with the connector that plugs into the car. The charging rates up to 1.92 kW which translates into approximately 8 miles of range per hour.
  • Level 2:These stations supply 208-240V and they require a dedicated 40-amp circuit. They usually use a standard J1772 vehicle plug. The charging rates up to 7.7 kW which means up to 26 miles of range per hour. Level 2 units are specific for residential applications or public parking areas. They are compatible with all vehicles and can fully charge the battery in up to 6-7 hours, depending on the model.
  • Level 3: Also called DC fast charging, these stations are the fastest ones. They use 480V circuits and require a direct-current plug. The charging rates up to 50 kW and can charge a battery to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

There’s absolutely no doubt that installing your own EVSE comes with many benefits. You can do up to 80% of charging at home, mainly at night when there are lower rates. The units selected by us don’t cost very much and they are very efficient, being at the same time very durable. If you want an indoor station that comes with many features, we recommend you ChargePoint CPH25-L18-P. This is a smart unit that is budget-friendly and quite stylish. It even works with Nest and Alexa, allowing you to take the charging to a new level. In case you want a smart outdoor model, then we recommend you JuiceBox Pro 40. You can install it both indoors and outdoors and control it with the smartphone application. We like this station because is versatile, compact, and features a long cable. However, if you want a charging point that costs less money, you may consider Siemens US2: VC30GRYU. It may be bulkier and heavier but you won’t be disappointed by the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

?How Much Maintenance Do Chargers Need?
In general, when properly installed, charging stations require little maintenance. Also, if you follow the instructions provided in the use manual, the charger won’t need any complicated maintenance. For any issue, we recommend you to call the electrician as unauthorized repairs can void the warranty offered by the manufacturer.
?How a Hardwired Station Differs from a Plug-In One?
Hardwired stations require a permanent installation. For this, you will need a pigtail or a knock-out panel. In case the unit gets defective, you will need an electrician to repair it. On the other hand, plug-in models are less complicated to install. You will need a 240V receptacle but if you don’t have one, just ask an electrician to install it for you. You can install the plug-in station later all by yourself.
?What Does EVSE Stand For?
EVSE stands for Electric Vehicle Service Equipment. This is the official name for the electric service charging station. It is also referred to as EV charging station or (electric) charging point.
